It is hard to overstate how excited I am that the first exhibit in the newly renovated gallery space not only features John Beerman, but showcases his works about the Hillsborough area.
John Beerman is a North Carolina native and acclaimed landscape painter who has exhibited nationally and internationally. John’s work is in the collection of numerous museums across the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh. Among other private and public collections, his work is at the Duke University Cancer Center, the Duke Endowment, and the North Carolina Governor’s mansion. He also has completed several public commissioned works including an 85-foot mural for the Milstein Family Heart Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and recently a painting for the UNC-REX Hospital in Raleigh.
John returned to NC and settled in Hillsborough a little over a decade ago. His works featured in this exhibit have in common a distinctly local subject matter - the woods, the gardens, the buildings, the places found
close to home here in Hillsborough.
I had the good fortune to study painting with John a decade ago, and have benefited from his mentorship and friendship ever since. The impact on my own art is evident, most notably a sustained interest in landscape painting in addition to a longstanding dedication to figurative artworks. Starting with my first exhibit of landscapes in 2012, Backyard Play (two works from that exhibit are displayed upstairs in the studio), my body of landscape works have overwhelmingly focused on distinctly local subjects - trees, streetscapes, gardens, and places found close to home here in Hillsborough.
John’s work fills the new gallery space, and I am thrilled to have an opportunity to exhibit a generous selection of his work here in our shared hometown. You’ll find my close to home works in the hallways and in the studio upstairs. Please enjoy.
