Artist Statement

Charcoal, and its cousin Conté, has been a favorite art material ever since I started attending drawing classes regularly over three decades ago. The works in this exhibition feature new directions and experimentation - e.g. charcoals presented more as a painting, mixed media and water-media, online models, oils used for charcoal-like effects, pushing darks against lights - on a foundation of the familiar territory of landscape and figurative work.
The exhibition includes a number of uncompleted “works in progress” that will evolve over the course of the show - stay tuned. ~

About the Artist
Thomas Stevens attended his first life drawing class while an undergraduate student at UNC Chapel Hill, and has continued to explore art throughout his life, with a continued interest in the human figure.
He began taking drawing classes and workshops in earnest in the 80’s and 90’s, then studied sculpture with Martine Vaugel when she had a studio in Durham. A decade ago Thomas studied oil painting under John Beerman, and oil landscapes have been significant part of his body of work ever since.
In 2015 he opened the Thomas Stevens Gallery in Hillsborough, NC. The building where the gallery is located underwent major renovation in 2021, allowing for major expansion of gallery space including a second floor artist studio.
