Artist Statement
Feathers & Fur is a celebration of the beauty and uniqueness of our feathered and furry companions. I aim to capture the essence of these creatures as well as their connection to the larger ecosystem by using found papers to add questions and thoughtful interpretation to each piece. By highlighting the vibrant colors of songbirds, mystique of squirrels and the gentle eyes of cats and dogs, I hope that my collages can inspire viewers to appreciate and protect the natural world around us.
My creative process involves carefully selecting each piece paper and paint color, and then layering them to create texture and depth. I use a variety of techniques, such as tearing, cutting, and painting the paper to achieve different effects. I work to bring each bird, cat, and dog to life in a unique and captivating way. Each collage looks different from close up and from far away. I invite you to look from a distance and then walk closer to see some of the found materials that make up the composition
In addition to the portraits of animals, I create self-portraits using the same medium of collage. Each self-portrait is a reflection of my inner self as I layer found printed materials to move toward personal discovery. This is an opportunity for me to make connections with the larger collective consciousness.
I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including other artists, nature and the emotions and experiences of everyday life. I am excited to share my collection of cut paper and paint collages with you at Tom Stevens Gallery.
